Meaning & Purpose

What Do We Mean by Meaning & Purpose?

Questions about meaning and purpose can arise at many different points in life.

You might have achieved things you once wanted but find they no longer feel as important. You may be going through a significant change, questioning your career or relationship, adjusting to children growing older or simply wondering whether the life you are living still feels like yours.

Sometimes nothing is obviously wrong.

Life may look fine from the outside, yet something feels missing.

Questions about meaning do not necessarily mean there is a mental health problem. They can simply be part of reflecting on who you are, what matters to you and how you want to live.

When Life Starts to Feel Directionless

Purpose does not necessarily mean discovering one big reason for your existence.

For many people, meaning develops through relationships, work, family, contribution, interests, experiences, values and the way they choose to live.

The difficulty can come when we become so focused on responsibilities and getting things done that we stop considering whether those things still matter to us.

You can become very good at functioning while gradually losing connection with where you are going and why.

You might find yourself asking:

  • What am I actually working towards?
  • What matters to me now?
  • Do I still want the things I once wanted?
  • Who am I outside the roles I perform?
  • Is the direction I’m travelling still right for me?

These questions don’t always require immediate answers. Sometimes the value is in creating enough space to genuinely consider them.

The Roles We Carry

Much of our identity can become connected with the roles we perform.

Partner. Parent. Son or daughter. Brother or sister. Friend. Provider. Employee. Manager. Business owner. Leader. Carer. Teammate.

These roles can provide enormous meaning, connection and purpose.

They can also occupy so much of our attention that we lose sight of the person performing them.

When a role changes or disappears through retirement, separation, children growing up, job loss, career change, bereavement or other circumstances, questions about identity and purpose can become more noticeable.

Sometimes the question isn’t simply:

What should I do next?

It is:

Who am I now?

What Can Contribute to a Loss of Meaning or Direction?

Some experiences that can lead us to question meaning or direction include:

  • Major life transitions
  • Career dissatisfaction
  • Retirement or approaching retirement
  • Relationship breakdown
  • Children growing up or leaving home
  • Grief and loss
  • Achieving a long-term goal and wondering what comes next
  • Burnout or prolonged stress
  • Feeling disconnected from relationships
  • Living according to other people’s expectations
  • Losing connection with interests or passions
  • Changes in health
  • Questioning previously held beliefs or priorities
  • Realising that your current life no longer reflects what matters to you

Sometimes there is no particular event. You may simply begin questioning the direction your life has taken.

Signs You May Be Struggling With Meaning or Purpose

You might notice:

  • Feeling that you’re simply going through the motions
  • Wondering what the point of things is
  • Feeling disconnected from work or relationships
  • Losing interest in goals that previously motivated you
  • Feeling restless despite life appearing successful
  • Questioning major choices
  • Feeling uncertain about who you are outside your roles
  • Comparing your life with other people’s
  • Feeling that something is missing but not knowing what
  • Thinking frequently about what you should be doing with your life
  • Feeling disconnected from your values
  • Wanting change but not knowing what that change should look like
  • Feeling as though life is happening around you rather than being actively chosen

Questions about purpose are not necessarily signs of depression. However, if they are accompanied by persistent low mood, hopelessness, loss of interest or thoughts that life is not worth living, it is important to seek appropriate support.

Therapy does not provide you with a ready-made answer about what your life should mean or tell you what direction you should take. It can provide the space to stop, reflect and better understand yourself.

How Therapy Can Help

Therapy does not provide you with a ready-made answer about what your life should mean or tell you what direction you should take.

It can provide the space to stop, reflect and better understand yourself.

Together, we can explore what matters to you, the roles and expectations you carry, the direction you’re currently travelling and whether that direction remains aligned with your values and the person you want to be.

Therapy may help you to:

  • Clarify what matters to you
  • Explore your values
  • Understand how your priorities may have changed
  • Consider the roles and expectations you carry
  • Reconnect with parts of yourself that have been neglected
  • Explore dissatisfaction with work, relationships or life direction
  • Understand patterns that may be keeping you stuck
  • Consider what you want the next stage of life to look like
  • Develop greater awareness of the choices available to you
  • Identify realistic steps towards greater alignment

You don’t necessarily need to know the whole journey.

Sometimes the work is about understanding where you are, considering the direction you’re travelling and making the next decision that feels more aligned with the person you want to be.

Things You Can Try Today

Questions about meaning don’t always require immediate answers.

  • Create some space. Spend some time without work, screens or other distractions and notice what comes up.
  • Ask what matters. Consider what is genuinely important to you rather than what you think should be important.
  • Notice where your time goes. Compare what receives your time and energy with what you say matters to you.
  • Think about when you feel most like yourself. Consider the people, places or activities associated with those moments.
  • Look at what has changed. Something that gave your life meaning ten years ago may not serve the same purpose today.
  • Reconnect with something you’ve neglected. It could be a relationship, interest, activity or part of yourself.
  • Consider your relationships. Meaning is often connected with the people and communities that matter to us.
  • Focus on the next step. You don’t need to work out the rest of your life today.

Frequently Asked Questions About Meaning & Purpose

Is it normal to question the meaning or direction of my life?2026-09-23T16:21:46+00:00

Yes. Questions about meaning, identity and direction can arise throughout life, particularly during periods of change or when circumstances that once provided a sense of purpose begin to shift.

Does feeling lost mean I have a mental health problem?2026-09-23T16:22:02+00:00

Not necessarily. Questions about direction, identity and purpose can be part of normal life. However, if you’re also experiencing persistent low mood, hopelessness, loss of interest or difficulty functioning, it may be worth speaking with a GP or mental health professional.

What if my life looks successful but I still feel unfulfilled?2026-09-23T16:22:18+00:00

What life looks like externally does not necessarily tell us whether it feels meaningful to the person living it. It can be useful to explore the difference between what you have achieved and what currently matters to you.

How do I work out what my purpose is?2026-09-23T16:22:37+00:00

There may not be one single purpose to discover. Meaning can develop through relationships, values, contribution, experiences, work, interests and the way you choose to live.

Can counselling and psychotherapy help with life direction?2026-09-25T03:40:31+00:00

Counselling and psychotherapy can provide space to clarify values, explore what has changed, understand what may be keeping you stuck and consider possible directions without telling you what your direction should be.

What if I don’t know what I want?2026-09-25T03:41:05+00:00

You don’t need to know before coming to therapy. Understanding what you want, what matters and what may no longer fit can be part of the work.

Do I need to make major changes to find more meaning?2026-09-23T16:23:30+00:00

Not necessarily. Sometimes greater meaning comes through changes in how you spend your time, relationships you invest in, boundaries you establish or activities you reconnect with rather than completely changing your life.
