Motivation & Feeling Stuck
What Can Feeling Stuck Look Like?
Feeling stuck can show up in different areas of life.
You may feel dissatisfied with work but remain uncertain about whether to leave. You might know a relationship needs attention but keep avoiding the conversation. You may want to improve your health, reconnect socially, address a problem or make a change but repeatedly put it off.
Sometimes the difficulty is not knowing what you want.
At other times, you know exactly what you want but cannot seem to move towards it.
You might spend considerable time thinking about what you should be doing, only to become frustrated with yourself when nothing changes.
The longer this continues, the easier it can become to criticise yourself, compare yourself with other people or decide that there must be something wrong with you.
That self-criticism can make taking the next step even harder.
Motivation Isn’t Always About Willpower
Motivation can change for many reasons.
Stress and exhaustion can leave you with little energy for anything beyond what absolutely needs to be done. Anxiety can make decisions feel risky. Perfectionism can make starting difficult because the outcome needs to feel right. Low mood can affect energy, interest and motivation.
Sometimes the goal itself may no longer matter to you in the way it once did.
There can also be a difference between waiting until you feel motivated and taking a small action before the motivation arrives.
Understanding what is getting in the way can help determine what kind of change might actually be useful.
Therapy can help you understand what being stuck actually means for you.
